Description
naturalistically modelled and painted, the melon tureen with a leafy flowering vine forming the handle on a fixed shaped plate forming the stand painted with flower sprigs, brown-edged rim, numeral 4 in blue to melon tureen and cover, together with a pair of Continental faience asparagus boxes and covers, probably German, circa 1765-70, modelled as a bunch of asparagus tied with string upon an integral leaf base with curled stem forming the handle, painted numeral 4(?) in manganese to three pieces

A similar asparagus box, without a leaf-formed stand, was formerly in the Collection of the late Count and Countess Guy du Boisrouvray, sold, Sotheby Parke Bernet, Inc., New York, 27-28 October 1989, lot 307, then later in Mario Buatta: Prince of Interiors, Sotheby's, New York, 25 January 2020, lot 184. A further similar example sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet, Inc., New York, 27 February 1975, lot 173. A further melon box on an integral plate stand, marked Z, probably for the Zerbst factory, was offered at Sotheby Parke Bernet, Inc., New York, 22 February 1974, lot 219.
