the body engraved with lotus blossoms amidst cloud bands and scrolling floral vines, with a band of cartouches bearing inscriptions interspersed with quatrefoils with floral motifs and cloud bands, all on a hatched ground

The inscriptions comprise Persian couplets, not fully deciphered. The distinctive lobed medallions, lotus blossoms and stylised cloud motifs resemble those found on a Timurid dish sold in these rooms, 22 April 2015, lot 32. A dish with similar lotus and cloud-band motifs engraved on a hatched ground, dated September 1496-August 1497, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no.374-1897; published in A.S. Melikian-Chirvani, Islamic Metalwork from the Iranian World, London, 1982, p.251, no.110).
