The influence of Chinese blue and white porcelain in conspicuous in the colour palette and floral decoration of this pottery dish. Under the Timurid dynasty, Persia developed a growing cultural and commercial relation with the Far-East. This particularly affected the local production of ceramics, with the reappropriation of the Chinese blue and white technique by centres including Nishapur, Mashhad and Samarkand between the fifteenth and early sixteenth century. However, pottery items clearly inspired by contemporary Ming porcelain dishes with floral decoration have been attributed to Tabriz (Soustiel 1985, p.216).
This dish is very similar to an example in the al-Sabah collection, Kuwait (inv. no.LNS 762C) which has been attributed by Oliver Watson to Tabriz (Watson 2004, p.455). For another closely comparable dish, see Sotheby’s London, 19 October 2016, lot 238.
