A Sèvres Porcelain Cup and Saucer (Gobelet litron et soucoupe), circa 1782
of the second size, decorated with tooled gilded friezes reserved against an apple-ground ground, the cup with a vignettes of five putti among foliage, one of which is holding a torch, the saucer similarly gilded with neoclassical motifs of a ruinous columnar base, musical instruments, a torch and bow and a quiver of arrows, and a further quiver of arrows and a shield, within ribboned borders of flower garlands and flowerhead medallions against a claret-ground, interlaced LL marks in blue enclosing date letters EE for 1782, painter's mark P7 for Jean-Jacques Pierre le jeune (active at Sèvres between 1763-1800), indistinct incised marks

Pierre joined the manufactory on 15 April, 1763, when he was about twenty-two years old, and records indicate that he remained employed there until at least 1800. He quickly established himself as a talented flower painter, specializing in the decoration of tea services and other porcelain wares. His skill was particularly evident in the finely painted borders of cornflowers, roses, daisies, and pansies that adorned teacups and saucers.
