Description
A Sèvres (Hard-Paste) Porcelain Black-Ground Plate, circa 1791
asiette uni, fond noir chinois en or platine, decorated with a black ground in imitation of Chinese lacquer, with gilt chinoiseries, after Jean-Baptiste Pillement, in two-tone tooled gold and enriched in platinum, the rim with three further chinoiserie vignettes, interlaced LL mark in gold enclosing date letters oo for 1791, painters mark 2000 in gold for Henri-François Vincent (le jeune) and Bn for Nicolas Bulidon, incised letter L

Where acquired by the present collector.
In the late 18th and early 19th century the Sèvres factory produced table wares and vases which imitated Asian lacquer which would be decorated in shades of gold and platinum on a black ground.
The technique described in the factory records as ‘fond noir Chinois’ or ‘fond noir Chinois en or.
The central scene on the present plate derives from a composition by Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808). The engravings after Pillement that were used at Sèvres are found in Jean Avril's Cahier de Balançoires chinoises, published circa 1770, the source for the present decoration being the engraving on the title page.
