A Louis XVI Gilt Bronze Mounted Mahogany and Plum Pudding Mahogany Cartonnier by François Barthélémy Crespi, known as Crepi, Circa 1785
the upper section with an arched top inset with a clock movement with gilt enamelled dial signed Heron a Paris above a sprung frieze drawer with an arrangement below of one long and four short red morocco leather filing boxes with gilt tooled borders and gilt bronze leaf tip pulls; the lower section with fluted pilasters on the front and rear corners flanking cupboard doors on both sides and raised on a moulded plinth; stamped CREPI five times on the back.

Very little biographical information is known about François-Barthélemy Crespi, who apparently was born in Rome and started his career in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine and later operated from centrally-located workshops in the Rue de la Pelleterie and Rue de la Calandre on the Ile de la Cité. His small surviving corpus of document works consists primarily of bureaux plats, commodes and other case furniture in the mature Louis XVI style manufactured with high quality richly figured mahogany or bois satiné veneers and exquisitely designed and chased gilt bronze mounts.
