Une page oblongue in-8 (150 x 234 mm), quelques ratures et corrections ; en anglais.
Introduction à la série des 12 gravures composant l'album Industry and Idleness [Le Zèle et la Paresse], édité en 1747.
Manuscrit de travail, avec ratures et corrections, du texte présentant cette suite d’estampes narratives sur la vie de deux apprentis tisserands : l’un plein de zèle obtient tous les honneurs et l’autre, un paresseux, sombre dans la pauvreté et finit pendu. Il s'agit du texte exact publié en 1747, à l'exception des 4 derniers mots, ici manquants. Cette introduction a paru, parfois réduite, dans les éditions postérieures.
Hogarth explique qu’il a gravé ces images davantage dans un but pédagogique que comme de simples ornements et qu'il a cherché à magnifier l’intention morale de ses gravures par la délicatesse et l’exactitude du trait.
"Industry and Idleness exemplified in the conduct of two fellow ’Prentices, where the one by taking good courses and pursuing points for which he was put apprentice becomes a valuable man and an ornament to his country, whilst ye [the] other giving way to Idleness naturally falls into poverty and must end fatally as is expressed in the last print. As the prints were intended more for use than ornament they were done in a way that might bring them within the purchase of those they might most concern, and least any part should be mistaken, description of each print is engraved at top. Yet notwith standing the inacuracy of the graving what is thought conducive and necessary for this purpose for which I intended such action and expression &c. and as careful to as the most delicate hands of the graver would have given, [some]times more for often expression. The first [?] suffers in this point for fear the beauty of the strokes should be spoiled and hasty touch when the fancy is warm give a spirit not to [equalled by high finishing]".
Pourfendeur des mœurs de la société britannique, considéré comme le père de l'estampe satirique anglaise, Hogarth a réalisé pour Industry and Idleness des planches fourmillant de détails savoureux et humoristiques.
