FIRST EDITION, ONE OF THE RARE COPIES WITH 78 NUMBERED PAGES. Racine's last secular tragedy, Phedre, was performed by the troupe of the Hôtel de Bourgogne on January 1, 1677. There are two editions of Phedre & Hippolyte dated 1677, one with 78 numbered pages and the other with 74 numbered pages. Alain Riffaud, in the Répertoire du théâtre français imprimé 1600-1699 (cited below) identifies the first edition as that of 78 pp (and the second edition as that of 74 pp.) The very finely engraved frontispiece represents the famous scene of Hippolyte's death. This frontispiece reappeared in the collective edition of 1687.

binding: Nineteenth-century red crushed morocco (163 x 96 mm), spine lettered in gilt, gilt edges, marbled endpapers. (Upper board detached, lower joint starting, extremities slightly rubbed).
