THE FIRST FRENCH EDITION OF A MANUAL OF ROMAN LAW BY THE NOTED JURIST GIASONE DEL MAINO (1435–1519), OWNED BY HANS JAKOB RÖMER.


Hans Jakob Römer zu Maretsch (fl. 1544-1569), the first owner of this volume, was a member of a Tyrolean noble family based principally in Bolzano, Italy. The Römer family moved from Rome to Bolzano around 1295, founding two chapels in the northern Italian city in 1325. Sigmund Römer acquired Maretsch Castle in 1477, hence the addition of "zu Maretsch" to the family name. In 1544, the castle was in the joint possession of the Römer brothers: Hans Jakob, Lukas, Christoph and Kaspar. They transformed the site from a medieval castle to the Renaissance landmark that stands today.

8vo (175 x 120 mm). Gothic type, double column, 51 lines plus headline. collation: 2a-2c8 2d12 a-z8 A-G8 H12: 288 leaves. Title printed mostly in red, within ornamental woodcut border, small woodcut of a master teaching, a1 with a small woodcut of the author and pupils, some early marginal annotations. (Some light marginal spotting.)


binding: Contemporary limp vellum (185 x 130 mm), "79" in ink on upper cover, , traces of 2 pairs of chamois ties, flat spine with early horizontal title in ink, and number "79" in red pasted to foot, head-edge with title, arms, and "I. Iacob. Rö/mer a Maretsch" in ink horizontally, manuscript binder's waste exposed. (Some wear and soiling, lacking ties.)
