Description

Pagnino, Antonio Baldino (Sante). Habes, candide lector, duos tomos Isagogae ad linguam Graecam capessendam septem continentes libros, quibus et lexicon annexum est ordine alphabetico secundum declinationes et coniugationes, vt index tibi ostendet quo lucidius copiosiusve nullum extitit antehac, Hos edidit reuerendus pater sacrae theologiae professor et concionator apostolicus frater Sanctes Pagninus Lucensis praedicatorii ordinis [Secunda pars: Isagogae…]. Avignon: Jean de Channey, 1525

An impressive and substantial Greek grammar and dictionary, composed by one of the most eminent linguistic scholars of his day, who produced numerous editions of Greek and Hebrew texts and auxiliary works, particularly relating to the Bible. Pagnino spent the years 1523-1526 in Avignon, probably in the entourage of the Cardinal Legate, to whom he had dedicated a work printed in Rome in 1523. It is the only work of Greek grammar to obtain a papal privilege in this period.

The printer, Jean de Channey, worked for Jacques Arnoullet in Lyon before moving to Avignon in 1513, where he produced books until his death in 1540. Very few of Jean de Channey’s editions feature his imitation of the Aldine anchor and dolphin device, of which two versions are known (Silvestre, Marques typographiques, nos. 149, 702).
