A Sèvres Porcelain Reticulated Square Tray (Plateau 'carré à jour'), circa 1765
of the third size, vibrantly painted with an ikat pattern, with a sunburst pattern in imitation of gathered fabric, with a puce and gold chevron pattern, and pink and blue stripes enriched in gilding, the reticulated rim formed of Vitruvian scrolls enriched with gilt dots and edged in blue alternating with puce bell-flowers, interlaced LL mark in blue enclosing date letter m for 1765, incised letters L, and J.F

The shape of this tray, made in three sizes, has been identified as a plateau carré à jour, in the Sèvres archives. It was produced with plain sides in 1753 and with openwork sides in 1757. For further details on this shape, usually intended as part of a breakfast service, see R. Savill, The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988, vol. II, pp. 585–588, where the author mentions that the motif of pierced scrolls and harebells is considered one of the earliest Neoclassical designs used at the factory.
Comparative examples of this pattern include a gobelet enfoncé and saucer in the Musée national de Céramique, Sèvres (inv. no. MNC 23014.1), and a gobelet Bouillard and saucer in the Art Gallery of New South Wales (acc. no. L2010.198).
