A Blue and White Iznik Pottery Border Tile, Turkey, circa 1530
of rectangular form, painted in underglaze cobalt and turquoise on a white ground, decorated with a design of scrolling stems issuing rosettes and leaves, a band of cloud bands to one side

The present tile belongs to the formative phase of Iznik production, distinguished by its crisp cobalt-blue and turquoise palette on a luminous white ground. The composition of scrolling floral sprays intertwined with stylised cloud bands reflects the assimilation of Chinese-inspired motifs into a distinctly Ottoman style during the first decades of the sixteenth century. Its restricted palette is characteristic of this early period, preceding the development of the broader range of colours associated with later Iznik production.
