A Sèvres Porcelain Reticulated Rectangular Tray (Plateau 'tiroir à jour'), circa 1763
of the second size, vibrantly painted with a frise riche pattern and enriched in gilding, with a band of alternating rocaille shells and diaper panels with gilt scrolls, a purple ribbon and green vine undulating between, and blue-ground panels with gilt lines, the reticulated rim formed of Vitruvian scrolls enriched with green vine with puce bell-flowers, interlaced LL mark in blue enclosing date letter K for 1763, painter's mark for Antoine-Louis Fontelliau (active at Vincennes and Sèvres between 1753-1782), incised letter R, and cursive letters IC or gc(?)

The shape of this tray, the rectangular version of the square plateau carré à jour, has been identified as ‘plateau tiroir à jour’ in the Sèvres records, the à jour denoting the pierced border. It was produced with plain sides in 1753 and with openwork sides in 1757. For further details on this shape, usually intended as part of a breakfast service, see R. Savill, The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988, vol. II, pp. 585–588, where the author mentions that the motif of pierced scrolls and harebells is considered one of the earliest Neoclassical designs used at the factory.
