A Sèvres Porcelain Milk Jug (Pot à lait à trois pieds), circa 1760
of the second size, with a green-ground enriched by three curling vertical ribbons in bleu lapis with gilt-dotted lobed edges, the branch form feet and handle picked out in gilding, gilt-dentil rim, interlaced LL mark in blue

A Sèvres déjeuner decorated with similar alternating green ribbon bands is preserved in the Royal Collection and illustrated in G. de Bellaigue, French Porcelain in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, vol. III, London, 2009, pp. 908-12, cat. no. 257. Bellaigue observes that the earliest known reference to ribbon decoration, dated 1757, is found in the Livre-Journal of the marchand-mercier Lazare Duvaux. In that year and the following one, Duvaux recorded the sale of numerous Sèvres pieces painted with ribbons in bleu lapis, bleu céleste, rose and, most commonly, green.
