A Sèvres Porcelain Déjeuner (Déjeuner Hébert), circa 1765
painted, perhaps Louis-Jean Thévenet (père or l’aîné), spectacularly decorated with a variation of a frises colorées or frises riches pattern, with a blue-ground border with radiating gilt-scroll panels reserving gilt and white dots, the tray enriched further with puce shells, supporting hanging garlands of mixes flowers, the tray with a further border around the rim of purple flower heads within entwined bands of gilt-foliate scrolls and myrtle laurel wreath, gilt-dentil rims, comprising:
a two-handled shaped oval tray, Plateau ‘Hébert’, of the first size, width across handles 18 in., 45.8 cm;
a teapot and cover, Théière ‘Calabre’, 4 3/4 in., 12.1 cm high;
a cream jug, Pot à lait ‘à trois pieds’, 4 3/4 in., 12 cm high;
a sugar bowl and cover, Pot à sucre ‘Hébert’, 4 1/8 in., 10.5 cm high;
and four cups and saucers, Gobelet ‘Calabre’ et soucoupe (one cup a modern hard paste replacement), diameter of saucers 5 1/4 in., 13.5 cm, incised cursive letter d to teapot, letter I to sugar bowl, OO and letter S to cups, and S or cursive E to saucers. 14 pieces.

The present Plateau 'Hébert' is an exceptionally rare surviving example of the model in its largest, first size. Indeed, only two comparable examples appear to be recorded in the published literature, both preserved in museum collections. One, an early Vincennes example of circa 1753, decorated with puce vignette reserves depicting putti, is in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (inv. no. 31888), and is illustrated in R. Savill, Everyday Rococo: Madame de Pompadour and Sèvres Porcelain, Norwich, 2021, p. 298, fig. 10-20-30. The second, a Sèvres example of circa 1760, with a pink and green ground and a central vignette of birds, is in the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford (obj. id. 1917.1022), illustrated in L. H. Roth and C. Le Corbeiller, French Eighteenth-Century Porcelain at the Wadsworth Atheneum: The J. Pierpont Morgan Collection, Hartford, 2000, cover and pp. 184-186.
Similar decoration can be seen on a pair of Sèvres pots-pourris Pompadour vases, of circa 1761, probably purchased by Marquise de Pompadour in December 1761 and sold at Sotheby's Paris, Hôtel Lambert, Une Collection Princière, 13 October, 2022, lot 593. Comparable radiating motifs appear in a design for a plateau by Jean-Claude Duplessis, apparently never produced, which is preserved in the Sèvres archives, inv. no. 2011.3.778.
