Description

painted in the manner of J. G. Höroldt, on each side with figures at various pursuits in gardens including a figure holding a baton while seated under a lustre-filled canopy, separated by large flowering branches of indianische Blumen, the interior with a similar chinoiserie figure scene, all within gilt, iron-red, purple and gilt scroll-edged quatrefoil cartouches, the rim with gilt lacework border to the interior, crossed swords mark in blue enamel, gilt numeral 4.

Diameter 6 ¾ in; 17,2 cm

The figures featured in one panel, of the figure seated under a canopy, and the kneeling figure, appear to correspond to drawings on plate 2 of the Schulz Codex, reproduced in Thomas Rudi, et. al., Exotische Welten. Der Schulz-Codex Und Das Fruhe Meissener Porzellan, Munich, Germany, 2010, p. 71.

Cranfield University used non-invasive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for this lot to screen the green enamel for chromium, which was not detected, a result consistent with 18th century manufacture.
