The Roussels were one of the most important families of cabinetmakers in Paris in the second half of the eighteenth century. This commode coincides with the period of Pierre Roussel I (1723–1782), who was received as master craftsman (maître) in 1745. He was known for elaborate and sensitive marquetry with figurative depictions of flowers, but often created pieces like the present commode that combine darker, interlacing borders with attractively grained timbers in X-formation. This decoration is inspired by the strapwork seen in early-eighteenth-century German ornament; a group of various Roussel commodes in this style, which he calls à la Régence, are illustrated in François Quéré's monograph on the Roussels, Les Roussel : Une dynastie d'ébénistes au XVIII^e siècle, Dijon, 2012, pp.154-161. Other commodes by Pierre Roussel in the same strapwork-influenced style include one at Sotheby's Paris, 7 November 2013, lot 135 and another, also from Galerie Röbbig, at Christie's London, 8 July 2010, lot 193.
