Apollo and Daphne: a bozzetto

oil on canvas

unframed: 46.1 x 58.5 cm.; 18⅛ x 23 in.

Possibly Miss Chaplin, London, by 1903;

Acquired by the mother of the previous owner circa 1960;

Thence by descent;

Until anonymously sold, London, Christie's, 22 April 2005, lot 1, for £19,200.

The present canvas loosely recalls a sketch of the same subject by Giacomo del Po, which sold at Sotheby's in 1982.1 It likewise directly relates to the second of a pair of large canvases attributed to del Po, one depicting Narcissus and the other Apollo and Daphne, sold at Christie's in 1999.2

When this painting sold at Christie's in 2005 (see Provenance), Prof. Nicola Spinosa confirmed the attribution to Giacomo del Po following first-hand inspection of the original.

2 Oil on canvas, 175.2 x 295.9 cm.; London, Christie's South Kensington, 27 October 1999, lot 353, for £78,500.
