These charming and minutely executed panels were painted in Antwerp in 1604, following the tradition of landscape painting established in the city by figures such as Joachim Patinir (circa 1480–before 5 October 1524) and Herri Met de Bles (circa 1510–after 1550), and later developed by Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568–1625). The execution of the landscape in both works is most comparable to the work of Adriaen van Stalbemt (1580–1662).
An alternative attribution to Marten Ryckaert (1587–1631) has been suggested by Jan de Maere, to whom we are grateful to. He identifies the panels as early works by the artist, and compares them to the signed and dated painting in The State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg.1
