The subject is taken from Luke, chapter 16, verses 19–31, and is a parable upon the futility of riches. The rich man, Dives, feasted every day in his palace and dressed in finery, while the poor Lazarus lay starving outside begging for crumbs, the sores on his legs being licked by dogs. Upon their respective deaths, Lazarus was raised to Abraham's Bosom, while Dives was cast into hell.
