Elaborately signed and twice dated 1582, this imposing portrait by Gortzius Geldorp depicts a member of the Sani family, of Tuscany, as demonstrated by the family's coat of arms in the upper left corner. Although Geldorp was born in Leuven, trained under Frans Francken the Elder (1542–1616) and Frans Pourbus the Elder (1545–1581) – both of whom were largely active in Antwerp – and spent the later years of his career in Cologne, he is thought to have travelled to Italy around 1576, when he was appointed court painter to Carlo d'Aragona Tagliavia, Duke of Terra Nova (1530–1599). Geldorp accompanied the Duke on a number of sojourns and the present portrait was likely executed on one such trip to Tuscany.
