Sackville Hamilton PC (1732–1818), Dublin;
Thence by descent to Charles Patrick Sackville Hamilton (b. 1949), North Yorkshire;
By whom sold anonymously, York, Duggleby Stephenson, 6 December 2024, lot 6160 (as after Gian Lorenzo Bernini, 18th century, possibly by Sackville Hamilton himself);
Where acquired by the present owner.
This composition relates closely to Gianlorenzo Bernini's Self-portrait while drawing in the Koelliker Collection, Milan.1 The pentimenti besides the figure's proper left thumb and along the top of his drawing sheet may be the result of a pupil responding to instructions in Bernini's workshop.
We are grateful to Dott. Francesco Petrucci for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
