C. Daly, 'List of paintings attributed to ‘Tommaso'', in D. Civettini, 'Tommaso'. Lorenzo di Credi’s ‘Doppelgänger’, exh. cat., London 2024, p. 56.
Tommaso, who specialised in devotional scenes of this nature destined for domestic settings, was a close follower of Lorenzo di Credi (c. 1456–1536) and in all likelihood trained in his workshop. Lorenzo’s influence is visible throughout the present composition, from the expansive landscape and arrangement of figures, to the pose of the Madonna and the physiognomy of the Child. This tondo compares particularly closely with Lorenzo's Adoration of the Child in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin.1
We are grateful to Dr Christopher Daly for his assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
