Note on Provenance

Until 1916 this work was in the distinguished collection of Adolf von Beckerath (1834–1915), a Berlin-based silk merchant who was regarded as a great connoisseur of Italian Renaissance art. His extensive collection included works by Botticelli, Michelangelo and Titian, alongside masterpieces of Renaissance sculpture.
