Description
MUZIO, GIROLAMO. Historia de' fatti di Federico di Montefeltro duca d'Urbino. Venice: Giovanni Battista Ciotti, 1605
The covers of the present volume feature the arms of De Thou as a bachelor, though the volume appears to be a remboîtage.
A copy of this edition was in De Thou's library (Catalogus bibliothecae Thuanae, Paris, 7 April 1680, I, p. 322) and afterwards in the the Soubise library (Catalogue des livres, imprimés et manuscrits, de la bibliothèque de feu monseigneur le prince de Soubise, Paris, 12 January-20 February 1789, lot 6687), however no details of its binding are known. The copy offered in the Giorgio Di Veroli sale (Parke-Bernet, New York, 28-29 February 1956, lot 600), described as bound in "full contemporary light tan morocco, gilt fillets enclosing, in the centers, the first arms of Jacques Auguste de Thou and monogram repeated seven times on backstrip", probably is the one here offered for sale.
4to (199 x 145 mm). Italic type, 27 lines plus headline. collation: a8 A-3B4 3D-3E4 3F1-5: 221 leaves (only, of 222, lacking terminal blank. Title-page with woodcut device, full-page woodcut author portrait to a8r, woodcut headpieces and initials. (Some spotting throughout, lacking terminal blank.)
binding: Citron morocco for Jacques-Auguste de Thou with his arms as a bachelor (211 x 159 mm), almost certainly a remboîtage, later label on spine, monogrammed initials to spine compartments, blue edges. (Old repairs to spine, extremities slightly rubbed.)
provenance: Covers (before 1600) from the library of Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617)—early modern ownership inscription trimmed at lower margin of title-page—likely Parke-Bernet, New York, 28-29 February 1956, lot 600. acquisition: Purchased in 1994 from Antiquariaat de Graaf, Nieuwkoop. references: USTC 4037206
