Description

GARIMBERTI, GIROLAMO. Concetti di Girolamo Garimberto, et d'altri degni autori. Venice: Domenico Farri, 1571

A CONTEMPORARY ROMAN ARMORIAL BINDING FOR JERÓNIMO RUIZ.

Thirty bindings have currently been identified with the arms of Jerónimo Ruiz (c. 1542) , a rampant lion with a silver fleur-de-lys in its dexter paw. The majority are on Italian texts printed in octavo between 1560 and 1569, making this example likely the smallest and the latest published volume bound for this collector. In 1991, Anthony Hobson concluded that they were bound in a single Roman workshop, which he named the "Ruiz Binder". This volume is not mentioned in Hobson's census of bindings for Jerónimo Ruiz (A. Hobson, Apollo & Pegasus: An Enquiry into the Formation and Dispersal of a Renaissance Library (Amsterdam 1975), pp. 219-220). The initials "I.R." have later been stamped over with "F.B.".

Ruiz belonged to a family of Spanish origin, resident in Rome. The contents of his library that survive indicate an interest in history, philosophy and literature and, alongside his brother, Michele, he ran a literary salon.

For another volume in the present sale bound for Jerónimo Ruiz, see lot 1759 (Manente).
