Description

FRANZ II, EMPEROR OF AUSTRIA. Manuscript patent of nobility granted to Andreas da Mula, bestowing the rank of Graf (duke), Vienna, dated 17 March 1821

AN ATTRACTIVE PATENT OF NOBILITY CREATED FOR GRAF ANDREAS DA MULA, GRANTED BY FRANZ II (1768-1835), EMPEROR OF THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE.

This patent of nobility was issued to the Venetian Andreas de Mula for his services to the Emperor Franz II of the Holy Roman Empire (Franz I of Austria), Napoleon's later father-in-law and last Emperor of the Holy Roman empire. The patent grants Andreas de Mula the rank of Duke (Graf) of the kingdom of Austria with all its rights and duties.

Franz II acceded to the throne during a time of great political upheaval in Europe caused by Napoleon's unquenchable thirst for power. His rule was cut short by the defeat at the Battle of Austerlitz which led to the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire but he stayed in power as emperor of Austria, Franz I. During the Napoleonic wars, Franz took a stance against Napoleon but continued to suffered defeats after Austerlitz and took a grave personal hit when his daughter Marie-Louise of Austria was wedded by proxy to Napoleon on 10 March 1810. Yet, neither Napoleon's hold over Europe nor the alliance was not meant to last, as the Corsican Emperor abdicated on 12 April 1814, allowing Marie-Louise to return to Austria.
