Description

DONI, ANTON FRANCESCO.

Second edition of Doni's first bibliography in a vernacular language, THE FIRST SURVEY OF ITALIAN PRINTED BOOKS. For the second edition, Giolito has recomposed the text (42 lines per page, rather than 34 in the first edition), in order to incorporate many additions. It has been suggested that the second edition, although dated 1550, was actually issued in 1551 for the purpose of sale with the Seconda libraria (see next lot).

12mo (128 x 72 mm). Roman and italic type, 42 lines. collation: A-F12: 72 leaves. Woodcut devices to title-page and verso of final leaf, woodcut initials.

binding: Late-nineteenth-century vellum (133 x 81 mm), title up spine in black, blue edges, marbled endpapers. (Some damage to upper pastedown from removal of bookplate.)
