FIRST EDITION OF THE ITALIAN TRANSLATION BY LODOVICO DOMENICHI, A VERY CLEAN, WIDE-MARGINED COPY.
Giovio's biography of Fernando Francesco d'Ávalos, Marquis of Pescara (1489-1525), a central figure in the service of Spain and the Holy Roman Empire during the Italian Wars, and the husband of the poet, Vittoria Colonna. 8vo (153 x 98 mm). Italic type, 29 lines plus headline. collation: A-Z8 Aa-Bb8 (R4 missigned E4, Z4 missigned H4): 200 leaves (final leaf blank). Woodcut initials, wide margins. (Small tear to upper margin of L5.)
binding: Contemporary pale limp vellum (160 x 103 mm), slight fore-edge flaps, title in ink on upper cover in a sixteenth-century neat humanistic hand, flat spine with early title in ink running down, remains of pasted label, edges gilt with twin dots gauffered around sides. (Binding slightly rubbed and soiled, tear without loss to head of spine.)
