A Japanese private collection, circa the late 1980s.

The motif of dragons amidst dense lotus scrolls is among the most characteristic designs of imperial Zhengde porcelain, appearing across dishes, bowls, stem bowls, zhadou and ewers of the period.

Exemplary dishes of this type are preserved in important museums, including the Beijing Palace Museum (acc. no. xin-46115); the Taipei Palace Museum (acc. no. guci-2590); the Sir Percival David Collection at the British Museum, London (acc. no. PDF,A.651); and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc. no. 63.155.1).

Further notable examples from prominent private collections have appeared at auction, including one from the Ise Collection, recently sold in these rooms, 9th September 2025, lot 5046; another from the Hotung Collection, 9th October 2022, lot 135; and a further dish formerly in the collections of Alfred Clark and Meiyintang, sold on multiple occasions, most recently on 9th October 2012, lot 19.

The enduring appeal of this design is also reflected in the Guwan tu (Pictures of Ancient Playthings), where a similar dish is depicted in the sixth scroll among the Yongzheng Emperor’s treasured antiques.
