The wood base bears the stamp of the Japanese woodworker and cabinet maker Kichizô Inagaki. Inagaki established himself in Paris in the early 20th century, becoming renowned for his elegantly crafted bases and stands for antiquities and African and Oceanic sculptures. His mounts were designed to be integrated, refined complements to the works they upheld, executed with expert joinery and distinctive polished wood finishes that distinguished them from the heavier, more conventional pedestals of the period.
