Description
An assembled pair of Sèvres Porcelain Flower Vases and Pierced Stands (Vases hollandois), circa 1765-70
of the second size, of tapering shaped oval form, painted with four floral wreaths and swags tied by varying coloured ribbons, below panels of gilt trellis against a dotted blue ground, spaced by pilasters of blue flowers on a pink ground headed by shells, the sand similarly decorated with four scroll-edged pierced openings, gilt-rims, one vase with interlaced LL mark in blue enclosing indistinct letter, perhaps R for 1770, painter's mark of a 9. for Charles-Nicolas Buteux (fils) (active at Sèvres between 1763-1800), traces of gilder's mark, the other stand with interlaced LL mark in puce enclosing date letter M for 1765, painter's mark S for Pierre-Antoine Méreaud (active at Vincennes and Sèvres between 1754-91), various incised marks to all pieces

This form of flower vase, intended for planting and growing bulbs, was introduced at Vincennes in 1754, and was available in three sizes. A drawing preserved in the archives of the Sèvres porcelain manufactory, depicting two profiles, bears the inscription "Vazes ou caisses de cheminée pour metre les fleurs par ordre de Mons. de Verdun le 29 mars 1754.".
