Maria Callas' Metronome

A Swiss E. Paillard and Company "Metronome de Maelzel," early 1950s


Wood obelisk-form case with removable lid on three ball feet, containing a metal pendulum with an adjustable sliding weight and winding mechanism, the black-painted interior with a printed paper label listing tempos, the lid with a metal manufacturer's label and a hook and eye closure.

Height 9 in.; width 4½ in.; depth 4½ in.

Acquired at the above sale by the present collector

Maria Callas' metronome, which helped guide her while she studied and practiced music. She kept it on her piano in her homes in Verona, Milan and Paris.
