Playing Cards — Mathematical Cards
52 playing cards. Engravings on paper, red hand-colored hearts and diamonds, versos blank; a few slightly worn with a few pale spots. 13 of the cards are framed, the rest are housed in archival sleeves in a folder affixed to the rear of the frame.

"The cards depict both mathematical instruments and the various professions which rely on such instruments, from architects to shipwrights and glaziers. The king of clubs card contains the details of the book- and instrument-seller Thomas Tuttell (fl. 1695-1702), instrument maker to the king and teacher of mathematics. The ace of spades lists some books and instruments relating to navigation, and the four of diamonds contains an almanac for the years 1700-1761. The second edition of these cards, dating from around 1710, has the armorial at the head of the king of clubs replaced by the word "Building"."
