Description

Empire style, decorated with classically draped female figures, the mounts in the form of winged sphynxes, resting on a tripod base, with a copper liner

Haut. 102 cm, larg. 53 cm, diam. 54 cm ; Height. 40 in, width. 20 1/2 in, depth. 21 in

This jardinière model with sphinx-shaped mounts is based on designs by Jacob Frères, including an Athenian one created for the Emperor's bedroom at the Château de Saint-Cloud in 1805, after designs by Charles Percier and Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine (now in the Château de Fontainebleau, inv. F.5C). The gilt bronze mounts also draw from the vocabulary of the ornamentalists Percier and Fontaine, who published the Recueil de décorations intérieures as early as 1801, a veritable bible of decorative motifs during the Empire period.
