the larger, seated open-mouthed, on a rectangular tasseled puce cushion painted with purple and gilt indianische Blumen, the other seated on its haunches, both with crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue

A figure of a spaniel was modelled in October - November 1734 for the Japanese Palace and attributed to Kändler, see Ulrich Pietsch, Die figürliche Porzellanplastik von Gottlieb Kirchner und Johann Joachim Kaendler, Munich, 2006, pp. 305-306. Two watercolours of a dog on a cushion were executed for the French market circa 1758, one for the widow of the marchand-mercier Michel-Joseph Lair.


An example of a spaniel seated on a cushion was in the historic List Collection, Magdeburg, sold, Hans W. Lange, Berlin, 28-30 March 1939, lot 784.
