Description

Seutter, Matthäus

Recens Edita totius Novi Belgii, in America Septentrionali siti, delineatio cura et sumtibus Matthæi Seutteri, Sac. Caes. Maj. Geographi August. Vind. Cum Gratia et Privil. S.R.I. Vicariat in part, Rheni, Sveviae, et Juris Franconici. Augsburg: Matthäus Seutter, [1740 or later]

Copper-engraved map (590 x 520 mm). Original hand color in pink, green, yellow, orange and green; some spots and stains to outer margins and verso, wear at vertical fold, upper left corner of margin chipped.

Seutter's printing of one of Jansson-Visscher maps on New England—the first map within the series to show the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The present map, within its third state, includes the mention of Seutter's newfound appointment of Geographer to the Imperial Court and granted privileges.

In celebration of the reinstallation of Dutch rule of New Amsterdam in 1674, the "Restitutio" View of New York was added by Dutch cartographer Hugo Allard to the Jansson-Vissher series and is inset at the lower right corner of Seutter's map. Accentuated by original pink color, the panoramic view features early Manhattan such as the Dutch Wall (at far right) later to become Wall Street.
