Remington, Frederic, A. B. Frost, and others (ill.) — A. C. Gould (ed.)
Sport, or Fishing and Shooting. Boston: Bradlee Whidden, 1889
Folio (940 x 445 mm). 15 chromolithographic plates accompanied by letterpress descriptions; several expertly repaired closed tears, primarily to margins of text leaves, some primarily marginal toning, dampstaining, and foxing, not affecting plates, instances of offsetting to verso of plates. Full antique dark purple straight grained morocco, bordered in gilt, spine gilt-lettered with repeated diamond motif; a few small scuffs.
A large-format work on sport in late 19th-century America, including rare works after Frederic Remington, A. B. Frost, Fred. S. Cozzens, R. F. Zogbaum, Henry Sandham and others.
The present work contains Remington's first two published prints in color, a rare A. B. Frost image of deer-hunting, and others depicting fly-fishing and hunting. According to Gould's preface, the plates are from watercolors commissioned for the work and were subjected to critical scrutiny by a group of sportsmen in order to ensure technical accuracy.
