Notable for its large size, the present carving is a rare example of the wearable jade ornaments with humanoid mask designs attributed to the Hongshan culture of the late neolithic period. See a similar jade ‘mask’ pendant unearthed in Ongniud (Wengniute) Banner in Inner Mongolia, see Deng Shuping, “Laizi caoyuan de shengqi yu jingling”, in Gugong wenwu yuekan, vol. XVIII, no.6, p.24, fig.14. Another related green jade humanoid mask ornament from the Lantien Shanfang Collection, was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 27 November 2019, lot 2705.

玉佩尺寸碩大,深綠色玉質,局部有白色斑點,大眼圓凸,三角形鼻,寬嘴民抿起,左右兩側有勾形雙耳,造型奇特。背面橫向對鑽牛鼻穿孔,作為繫綁用途。此類獸面或人面形玉佩也曾在內蒙古自治區翁牛特旗出土,見鄧淑萍,〈來自草原的神祇與精靈〉,載於《故宮文物月刊》,第十八卷,第六期,頁24,圖14。藍田山房舊藏一件紅山文化青玉人面飾,售於香港佳士得2019年11月27日,編號2705。
