Description

each part of lobed pyriform shape set with turquoise around a central repoussé panel with foliate designs around turquoise cabochons, the reverse of one part inscribed '1[8]57' '89'

together 21.2cm. length

The elaborate turquoise inlaid decoration of this belt buckle is comparable to the sheath of a sword attributed to Khuqand and a Bukharan dish in the State Hermitage Museum (inv. nos.OP-167 and VZ-286, see Piotrovsky & Pritula 2006, p.216 and p.218). The accompanying belt to the sword’s sheath furthermore displays lobed, turquoise-set plaques centred by a panel with inserts, related in form to the present belt buckle.
