Description

[Catalog - Natural History]

Catalogue d’un Très Beau Cabinet d’Histoire Naturelle, consistent en Coquillages, Doublettes, Corails, Madrepores, Minéraux, Pétrifactions, Insectes en Liqueur, Insectes desséchés, Papillons, Suaterelles, Hannetons, Oiseaux embaumés des Indes Orientales et Occidentales, Quadrupédes, Simples de Quantités de Sortes, &c. N.p.: n. d. [circa 1760]

8vo (199 x 124 mm). Some pale spotting and light toning. Contemporary marbled paper wrappers, stitched as issued; paper covers worn, with some creasing, fraying at edges, and losses at spine.

An exceedingly rare catalog, likely for an auction, of an impressive natural history collection. The cabinet comprised shells, minerals, insects, and animals, including quadrupeds, birds, and reptiles, stuffed or preserved in alcohol. The book gives no information about the collector’s name, the publisher, the date, or the place it was printed, though it may be Belgian or Dutch, and was likely printed around 1760. The author regularly cites works by Rumphius and Dezallier d'Argenville.
