Half title, engraved portrait frontispiece of the author, additional engraved title, typographic title to part I printed in red and black with a woodcut vignette, 20 engraved plates including a double-page engraved map of Japan and single-page map of "Tunquin," part V with engraved vignette of the crowning of Solimann III and 2 engraved head-pieces by I. I. Durant, woodcut initials and head and tail-pieces throughout; some light soiling and pale staining, the first two leaves creased and with short edge tears, the following preliminary leaves a bit worn at edges, final leaf of preface defective and separating at bottom of gutter, a tear in plate 5 of part II and plate A of part III.

3 titles bound in one; contemporary vellum, spine titled and ruled in blind; some soiling to the vellum, a small tear in the spine affecting the blind-lettered title, the front joint starting, hinges cracked, the text block nearly detached, the sewing holding to the spine at the front hinge but not the rear.
