This striking design of large bamboo brush and inkstick set on an inkstone is unusually stylised. The notched bamboo rod emerges from the right of the composition and is rendered with strong shading both at the nodes and at the tip of the brush. Pointillistic dots stipple the surface of the rim of the ink stone to give a sense of its stony texture. The subject of writing utensils within Ko-Kutani design is exceedingly rare and suggests the mastery of calligraphy (sho) from the Four Accomplishments (Kinkishoga); the others being the zither (kin), the game go (ki) and painting (ga).
