Description

the octagonal dish with everted rim and tall ring foot, decorated in red, green, yellow and blue overglaze enamels on underglaze blue, with the Assortment of Treasures (takara-zukushi) motif surrounding the character for ‘Longevity’ (Ju), the reverse with large peonies and foliage on each of the eight facets, the ring foot with comb pattern, accompanied with three fitted wood storage boxes

This dish is inscribed with the character for ‘Longevity’, ju - alternatively read kotobuki - encircled by the Assortment of Treasures (takara-zukushi) motif. The myriad treasured objects comprise of eight wish-granting jewels (hoju), flap castanet (binzasara), cymbals (nyohachi), gourd-shaped fan (gunbai), conch shell (horagai), treasure scroll (makimono), books (sasshi), money pouch (kinchaku), ceremonial fly whisk (hossu), panpipes (sho), lucky mallet (uchide no kozuchi), clove (choji), invisibility hat (kakuregasa) and straw cloak (kakuremino), and treasure sword (hoken). The abundance of auspicious elements on this dish makes it aptly suitable for presentation on an equally jubilant and celebratory occasion.
