Description

the deep circular dish with slightly everted rim and raised foot ring, decorated in yellow, green, blue and black enamels, with a butterfly in flight above waves and a bush warbler on a plum branch overhanging a steep cliffside verdant with bamboo, the rim with a band of stylised lozenges above a further band of hanabishi, the raised rim in brown iron oxide glaze, the reverse with large stylised chrysanthemum flower heads among foliate scrolls, accompanied with two fitted wood storage boxes

It is thought that large Aode Kutani [lit. Green Kutani] dishes such as this were used for sumptuous daimyo banquets. Sherds of similarly decorated dishes were discovered on the site of the Maeda residence of the Kaga daimyo indicating the patronage and clientele of these wares.1 The seeming spontaneity of the bold designs, as well as their predominantly yellow palette, would find consonance with the daimyo mansion interiors installed with gold leaf ground fusama or screens. Here, a highly stylised butterfly is suspended over gently rolling waves. A small bush warbler (uguisu) is perched on the tallest branch of plum, while clusters of bamboo flank the steep cliff face.

據考證，此類青手古九谷（即綠色類型九谷燒）巨盤，當時應用於大名舉辦的豪奢盛宴。考古學家於加賀大名前田氏宅邸遺址，發現同類紋飾瓷片，足證此類器物乃受特定權貴階層贊助與使用。¹ 其構圖看似率性奔放，以黃色為主調，恰與大名宅邸內飾有金箔底襖繪或屏風的空間相呼應，此處可見高度風格化的蝶紋懸於輕柔波濤之上，梅枝巔棲著嬌小鶯鳥，而陡峭岩壁兩側則簇擁著竹叢。
