The freedom of movement and carefree approach to design is at the heart of Kutani ware. No two Kutani dishes of this type are the same; each artist appears to have approached their project as a unique work, no doubt giving momentum, impetus and freedom to the artists who embellished these wares.
First produced around the middle of the 17th century, this style of early Hizen overglaze enamel ware porcelain with boldly rendered motifs and in hues of thick yellows, greens on richly decorated grounds are known as ao-de, or green type Kutani. Such large dishes, often measuring over 30 cm. in diameter were believed to be used for celebratory or festive occasions in daimyo households.
