Sancai-glazed ewers of this type are noted for their remarkable chromatic variety. Particularly rare examples showcase a fusion of imported cobalt-blue pigments with amber glazes, creating a visual spectacle that is both vibrant and historically significant. Compare two ewers housed in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York: one from the Ernest S. Heller Collection and another, formerly from the Stanley Herzman Collection, which was sold at Sotheby's New York on 6th November 1981, lot 161, and subsequently published in Suzanne Valenstein, The Herzman Collection of Chinese Ceramics, Hong Kong, 1992, pl. 6. A third related ewer,in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, illustrated in He Li, Chinese Ceramics: A New Comprehensive Survey from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, 1996, pl.166. Compare also two highly related ewers sold in our New York rooms: one was in the Szeyuan Tang Collection and sold on 21st September 2005, lot 16, and another piece sold on 20th March 2007, lot 601; and another two sold in Christie's Hong Kong, one sold on 30th November, 2016, lot 3306, and another sold on 31st May 2017, lot 3310.
