Description

Schenck, Peter

Diversa Orbis Terræ, Visu Incedenter per Coluros Tropicorum, Ambos ejus Polos, et Particularis Sphæræ, Zenith, in Planum Orthographica Projectio... Amsterdam: Peter Schenck, circa 1710

Double-page engraved map (to sight: 204 x 588 mm) printed on a single sheet, hand-colored; old central fold, no visible defects, not examined out of frame.

This world map by Amsterdam mapmaker Peter Schenk represents a radical departure from the norms of the Dutch cartographic tradition. Instead of filling his margins with mythological or allegorical subjects, Schenk instead uses a strictly scientific decorative scheme, surrounding his central double-hemispheric world map with a variety of map projections that depict the world from all angles. Nonetheless, he still finds space for two small groups of cupids.
