Description

Pieter van der Aa [after David Loggan].

“Vue de la Bibliothèque Bodleienne du côté interieur de l’Orient” and “Vue de la Bibliothèque Bodleienne du côté interieur de l’Occident”, [Leiden, 1727]

Two horizontal views of the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, copperplate engraving, unframed: c. 135 x 165 mm, framed: 298 x 320 mm, hand-coloured, “Pag. 604 a” printed on upper-right corner, previously folded, small tear to lower left-hand corner, not examined out of frame

Pieter van der Aa (1659–1733) was a Dutch printer, publisher, and bookseller, best known for atlases with copperplate engravings, most commonly depicting views of cities. This engraving is likely from James Beeverell, Les delices de la Grand' Bretagne, & de l'Irlande (Leiden: Pieter van der Aa, 1727), an eight-volume illustrated series of which two were dedicated to views of Oxford and Cambridge. Pieter van der Aa’s Oxford plates are after David Loggan's Oxonia Illustrata of 1675, including these views of the Bodleian Library.
