A FASCINATING DOCUMENT OF A FAST-CHANGING EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY GEOGRAPHICAL, POLITICAL, AND TECHNOLOGICAL LANDSCAPE, ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC. The present album was compiled by a member of the family who are strikingly depicted as a travelling musical ensemble aboard their barge in Johann Zoffany's 1779-81 painting "The Sharp Family" at the National Gallery, with this album's contents dating from approximately the same period. The most prominent members of the family were Granville (1735-1813) and his elder brother William (1729-1810), both of whom are known for their roles in the British abolitionist movement. William's name is inscribed on the verso of a map of South Carolina and Parts Adjacent (item 89) and a watercolour cartoon by Cooper Willyams of an Irish Jaunting Car, but the extensive inclusion of material relating to canals and waterways makes James a more obvious contender as the album's compiler. Prince Hoare's Memoirs of Granville Sharp, esq. (London, 1820) lauds James' "inventive genius, and knowledge of mechanics", and asserts that "to him, chiefly, this kingdom is indebted for the establishment of its inland navigation" (p. 22). Indeed, the album includes Faden & Jeffreys' "Plan of the intended Navigable Canal, from Moor-Fields, into the River Lee at Waltham Abby" (item 21), a scheme which James is known to have taken an extensive role in promoting (ibid., p. 22), and also included is an engraving of James Sharp's design for a winnowing machine (item 56).
Two of the most intriguing items point to the family's techno-futuristic enthusiasm for the transformative possibilities of steam power at an early phase of the Industrial Revolution. The album includes a watercolour sketch captioned "A plan of a new invented carriage calculated to convey Goods, Merchandize or Passengers &c. from one place to another without Horses but by force or power of steam only. Invented by Thomas Hunt of Hammersmith, 1789" (item 94). Though Nicholas-Joseph Cugnot had built the first self-propelled road vehicle two decades before this sketch was produced, the drawing predates Richard Trevithick's London Steam Carriage (the first self-propelled passenger-carrying vehicle) by almost a decade and a half. Similarly, the album includes a sketch of a paddle steamer designed to replace the use of horses or men for towing barges (item 97). In addition to these sketches of vehicles and the numerous maps and plans concerned with revolutionising the canal system are six rare maps of America—revealing the Sharp family's outward-facing perspective on the seismic events of the unfolding American War of Independence.
The eclectic nature of the Sharp family's interests are revealed through the contents of this album. Their musical interests are hinted at by the inclusion of a pen and ink diagram captioned "An Octave of the Monochord" (item 50), whilst other subjects include typography (items 48 and 58), botany (item 92), sculptures of athletes (item 102), nautical flags (item 52), and grammar (item 65).
